It is almost expected of concept cars these days to have strong eco-friendly credentials, and SEAT’s IBX Concept is no different.

The IBX concept car charges from domestic power points and is capable of running in its purely electric mode for up to 50 kilometres. SEAT see the IBX as its new vision for an urban SUV and, with most journeys tending to being shorter and more local ones, the zero emissions of its electric mode would make it a prime candidate for drivers with one eye on their carbon footprint.

With an internal combustion engine also fitted, the SEAT IBX will have no trouble with long distance journeys either.

The car was first unveiled in March at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, where its strikingly minimal look caught the eyes of many onlookers. The clean and crisp design of the IBX benefits from the complete absence of any ornamentation. Although its dimensions are those of an SUV, it has the look and feel of a sports coupe. SEAT hope that this look, as well as its green credentials will make the car appealing to city-dwelling families.

The Chief Designer at SEAT, Luc Donckerwolke, said of the IBX: “We are proving that with our design, our sporty pedigree and our youthful character, we can also create a vehicle concept that is unique among SUVs.”

There have been rumours suggesting that production of the IBX concept car has been given the green light, but as of yet there has been no official confirmation from SEAT. If production does go ahead, then expect the SEAT IBX Concept to make some waves in the SUV market.
